Tiger, lions, leopards, panthers, jaguars and cougars cannot purr when inhaling because of their cartilaginous hyoid bone (attached to the vocal cord). This bone allows these cats to roar. Small wild cats and domestic cats have a bony hyoid bone that allows them to purr while inhaling and exhaling, but prohibits them from roaring.
